For Malvern Prep 3-star Jake Hornibrook, 'people are most important' in recruiting processThe Patriot-News, Harrisburg, Pa. — Daniel Gallen The Patriot-News, Harrisburg, Pa.
May 16--Nothing in the recruiting process has really surprised Jake Hornibrook. After all, his older brother Alex went through the same process a couple years ago.
So the Malvern Prep offensive lineman is taking his time during the process, but he wants to make a decision soon. The three-star recruit told PennLive he wants to try to start narrowing down his choices when the current evaluation period ends May 31 and then make his commitment before the start of his senior season with the Friars.
But when Hornibrook eventually makes his decision, he'll have plenty of choices. The junior has 25 offers from an assortment of prominent schools that counts Nebraska, Tennessee, Clemson, Stanford, Oregon, West Virginia and Baylor (see below for full list).
"It's definitely really cool to get to go around the country and see a lot of places," Hornibrook said Tuesday. "Definitely a cool experience."
But Hornibrook's most recent offer is one of his most intriguing. Wisconsin, where his brother is the starting quarterback, offered him last week.
"I was really excited when I got the news," Hornibrook said.
Hornibrook has known the Wisconsin coaching staff for a while -- Alex Hornibrook signed with the Badgers in the Class of 2015 -- and offensive line coach Joe Rudolph, who is also the associated head coach and offensive coordinator, came to one of Hornibrook's workouts and saw him "for the first time in a while."
Rudolph came away impressed, and Wisconsin extended the offer.
"I've been getting recruiting by them for a while," Hornibrook said. "Obviously, my brother goes there, so we're friends with the coaches, and I've been talking to the O-line coach and [tight ends coach Mickey Turner], and he wanted to see me in the spring. He liked what he saw."
Hornibrook said he's visited Virginia, Duke, North Carolina, Northwestern, Stanford, Clemson and Boston College this spring. He said he's done with making visits right now, and he's talking to coaches on a nightly basis. Hornibrook said his main priority when making his visits was meeting the coaches and players in the program.
"I'm just looking forward to meeting the people because people are most important," Hornibrook said. "Everywhere is going to have cool facilities, and they can sell you on that."
There hasn't been a bad visit, Hornibrook said, and he hasn't taken the time to narrow anything down yet. There are currently two predictions for Hornibrook logged in the 247Sports crystal ball feature -- one for Clemson and one for Wisconsin. Hornibrook's teammate, three-star linebacker Keith Maguire, recently committed to the Tigers, and Hornibrook said it's been helpful to have someone close to him going through the same process.
Whichever team Hornibrook commits to will be getting one of the area's top offensive linemen. Hornibrook, who is listed at 6-foot-4 and said he weighs 277 pounds, earned first-team All-Inter-Ac honors on the offensive line last season while helping Malvern Prep to its first outright Inter-Ac title since 2011.
In the 247Sports composite rankings, Hornibrook is a three-star recruit, the No. 27 player in Pennsylvania and No. 95 offensive tackle nationally. The service's own rankings have him as the No. 66 tackle nationally.
Hornibrook's greatest concern in the recruiting process is who he'll be around for the next four years. That will inform his eventual college decision this summer and beyond.
"I'm looking for on-the-field fit and off-the-field fit," Hornibrook said. "All-around best college experience for myself."
